PART 2 — THE 99 CALLS THAT CAME TOO LATE

I silenced my phone.

Then I turned back to Chloe.

Nothing else mattered.

The steady rhythm of the ventilator was the only sound I wanted to hear.

Her fingers looked impossibly small wrapped around mine.

The same fingers that had proudly shown me every school drawing since kindergarten.

The doctor stepped quietly into the room.

“She’s stable for now.”

“For now?”

He nodded.

“The next twenty-four hours are critical.”

I kissed Chloe’s forehead.

“I’m not leaving.”

Two hours later my assistant, Michael, arrived.

He carried a tablet.

“Mrs. Vance…”

“What?”

“The yacht has been escorted back to the marina.”

I looked up.

“And?”

“Mr. Grant is demanding access to the vessel.”

“He no longer has it.”

Michael hesitated.

“He says it’s his yacht.”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

I reached into my purse and handed him a folder.

“The Sovereign has always been registered solely under Evelyn Charlotte Vance.”

Michael opened the documents.

“The purchase came from your inheritance.”

“My grandfather insisted every major asset remain separate property.”

Grant never cared enough to read the paperwork.

He simply assumed everything that belonged to me automatically belonged to him.

My phone rang again.

Grant.

I answered this time.

“Evelyn!”

His voice exploded through the speaker.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

“You froze every account!”

“The marina threw me off my own yacht!”

“Our yacht.”

“No.”

I looked at Chloe.

“My yacht.”

He ignored that.

“My clients were onboard!”

“You embarrassed me.”

“My cards were declined!”

I closed my eyes.

“Good.”

Silence.

Then he laughed bitterly.

“So this is because of Olivia?”

I said nothing.

“You found out.”

“I was going to explain.”

“You don’t need to.”

“Evelyn, stop acting like a child.”

I slowly stood beside Chloe’s bed.

“Where are you?”

“I’m at the marina.”

“Wrong answer.”

“What?”

“Where were you at 1:17 this afternoon?”

He hesitated.

“I…”

“Where?”

“I already told you.”

“No.”

I looked at the monitor beside my daughter.

“You told Chloe you’d have lunch with her.”

More silence.

Then…

“I had an important meeting.”

“Our daughter almost died.”

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

For several seconds I heard only his breathing.

Finally…

“What did you say?”

I repeated every word.

“Our daughter.”

“Almost.”

“Died.”

The phone slipped from his hand.

I heard it hit the dock.

Someone nearby shouted his name.

When he picked it up again, his voice had completely changed.

“Which hospital?”

“You don’t deserve to know.”

“Evelyn!”

“Which hospital?”

“You ignored eleven calls from the emergency room.”

“I…”

“The ICU nurses know your name.”

“They know exactly how many times they tried to reach you.”

His breathing became ragged.

“I didn’t hear…”

“You were drinking champagne.”

“I can explain.”

“No.”

“You can listen.”

I looked through the glass toward Chloe.

“Your daughter asked for you while she couldn’t breathe.”

“She waited.”

“She believed you were coming.”

His quiet sob reached me through the phone.

“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

“You won’t.”

“What?”

I nodded toward Michael.

“Call security.”

Grant heard me.

“Evelyn…”

“The hospital has your photograph.”

“I’ve already instructed them.”

“They are not to let you into Chloe’s room.”

His voice broke.

“You can’t do that.”

“I can.”

“And I just did.”

Thirty minutes later the head of hospital security knocked softly.

“Mrs. Vance?”

“Yes.”

“Your husband is downstairs.”

“He refuses to leave.”

“What did he say?”

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“He keeps repeating…”

“I just want to see my little girl.”

I smiled sadly.

“My little girl wanted to see her father six hours ago.”

The guard lowered his eyes.

“What would you like us to do?”

“Keep him outside.”

“He can stay there all night if he wants.”

Near midnight Chloe’s fingers moved.

Very slightly.

“Mom…”

“I’m here.”

She opened her eyes only halfway.

“Did Daddy come?”

My heart shattered.

I brushed the hair away from her face.

“He came too late.”

A single tear rolled down her cheek.

“I waited…”

“I know, sweetheart.”

“I know.”

She fell asleep again.

I sat beside her until dawn.

Outside the ICU windows I could still see Grant.

Alone.

Still wearing the same clothes from the yacht.

Still staring toward the intensive care unit.

He thought the hardest part would be earning my forgiveness.

He hadn’t yet realized that the person whose forgiveness mattered most…

was the twelve-year-old girl who had almost died believing her father had simply forgotten lunch.
