PART 2 — THE NURSERY SHE NEVER WANTED ME TO SEE

I stood outside the nursery for nearly a minute before turning the handle.

The room smelled faintly of lavender.

Everything inside had been prepared with impossible care.

A white crib stood beneath the window.

Tiny dresses hung inside the closet.

Shelves overflowed with children’s books Claire had quietly collected over the past seven months.

None of that surprised me.

What stopped me was the wall.

Hundreds of photographs covered it.

Not family portraits.

Appointments.

Ultrasounds.

Baby showers she had attended alone.

Pictures of empty chairs.

One photograph showed the examination room from three months earlier.

My name was written on the appointment card.

The chair beside Claire was empty.

Another photograph.

Our twenty-week anatomy scan.

Again…

An empty chair.

Then another.

Prenatal class.

Only pregnant women and their partners.

Claire smiled weakly at the camera.

The chair beside her remained empty.

Every photograph carried a handwritten date.

Every empty chair belonged to me.

My chest tightened.

Michael quietly stepped into the doorway.

“Sir…”

I couldn’t answer.

On the changing table sat a leather notebook.

Claire’s handwriting covered the first page.

If you’re reading this…

it means you finally opened the room.

I sat down.

My hands shook as I turned the page.

Week 9.

Daniel promised he’ll come next time.

Week 12.

Emergency meeting.

Maybe next appointment.

Week 16.

He forgot.

Again.

Week 20.

Our daughter waved during the ultrasound.

I laughed.

Then cried in the parking lot because I couldn’t describe it to anyone who had actually been there.

The words blurred.

I turned another page.

Week 24.

Today she kicked for the first time while Daniel was home.

I asked him to feel it.

He said he’d be there in one minute.

His phone rang.

He never came back upstairs.

I kept reading.

Week 28.

I’ve stopped asking.

It’s easier when you expect nothing.

I closed the notebook.

For the first time in years…

I couldn’t breathe.

Michael quietly spoke.

“Sir…”

I looked at him.

He hesitated.

“There is something else.”

He handed me a sealed envelope.

“It was hidden beneath the notebook.”

On the front, Claire had written only three words.

For Daniel.

Inside was a flash drive.

Nothing else.

I plugged it into my laptop.

The first file opened automatically.

Security footage.

Our penthouse.

Three months earlier.

The day I claimed I had spent the night negotiating with investors.

The timestamp read 11:48 p.m.

I walked into the apartment.

Not alone.

A woman followed behind me.

Olivia.

The same woman whose perfume Claire had smelled on my jacket.

I watched myself laughing.

Pouring wine.

Standing far too close to her.

The recording ended before anything else happened.

Another file opened.

This one came from the lobby cameras.

Olivia leaving alone nearly two hours later.

The final recording came from the elevator.

Claire stood inside after Olivia left.

Hidden in the corner where neither of us could have seen her.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t screaming.

She simply watched the elevator doors close.

Then she rested one hand on her stomach.

And whispered something almost too quiet to hear.

“I hope she never believes this is how love looks.”

I froze.

Our daughter.

She had been talking to our daughter.

Michael lowered his voice.

“We checked the security archive.”

“I never deleted those recordings.”

“I don’t know who copied them.”

I stared at the screen.

Claire hadn’t left because she caught me once.

She left because I kept choosing someone else…

every single day afterward.

Then Michael’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What happened?”

Silence.

Then he slowly looked at me.

“Rebecca just called.”

My heart stopped.

“What about Claire?”

“They found her.”

I stood so quickly the chair crashed behind me.

“Where?”

Michael swallowed.

“At Mercy Women’s Hospital.”

I grabbed my keys.

“Is she okay?”

He hesitated.

Then quietly said the words I will never forget.

“Sir…”

“Your daughter was born this morning.”

I couldn’t move.

“The delivery happened six weeks early.”

I stared at him.

“And Claire?”

Michael’s face turned pale.

“The doctors say she’s alive…”

“…but she’s refusing to let anyone tell the baby who her father is.”
