THE CALL SIGN THEY WERE NEVER MEANT TO HEAR

“Valkyrie,” the new voice said over the radio.

Sarah’s fingers tightened around the controls.

The name had not been spoken in five years.

Not since she had walked away from the Air Force, turned in her flight gear, and promised herself she would never again fly where every decision carried the weight of someone else’s life.

Raptor One drifted back.

Raptor Two did the same.

The pilots’ earlier arrogance had vanished.

“Valkyrie?” the second pilot repeated.

Sarah kept her eyes forward.

“That name belongs to someone who retired.”

The third aircraft came into view behind them.

It was not another F-22.

It was an unmarked black reconnaissance jet, sleek and silent beneath the bright Atlantic sky.

The older voice returned.

“Sarah Bennett, maintain your heading and keep your frequency open.”

She exhaled slowly.

“General Monroe.”

“Good to hear your voice again.”

The two Raptors remained silent.

Sarah glanced at them.

“You sent them?”

“I sent them to clear the airspace,” Monroe replied. “They were not supposed to intercept you.”

Raptor One clicked his microphone.

“Sir, civilian control did not identify her.”

“Because her file was sealed,” Monroe said sharply. “And because neither of you bothered to ask before deciding you knew who she was.”

Sarah almost smiled.

Almost.

The general continued.

“Valkyrie, there is an emergency operation below your current position.”

Sarah looked through the windshield.

At first, she saw only open water.

Then a glint appeared between the waves.

A small research vessel.

It was drifting without power.

“Why am I involved?” she asked.

The answer came after a pause.

“Because the vessel’s pilot is your father.”

Sarah’s breath stopped.

Her father had spent years studying Atlantic currents for the Navy before retiring to a quiet life in Maine.

He had never told her he was back at sea.

“What happened?”

“His ship received a distress signal from an unmanned test platform,” Monroe said. “He went to investigate. The platform began transmitting interference that shut down navigation systems in the area.”

Sarah’s instruments flickered.

The Cessna dipped slightly.

She corrected it immediately.

“You brought fighters to protect a malfunctioning platform?”

“No,” Monroe answered. “We brought fighters because someone activated it on purpose.”

The realization settled heavily in her chest.

This was not an accident.

Someone knew her father’s vessel would be near the platform.

Someone knew Sarah would be flying this route.

Raptor Two spoke carefully.

“General, are you saying this aircraft was targeted?”

“I am saying,” Monroe replied, “that the person controlling that platform requested Sarah Bennett by name.”

Sarah looked at the sea again.

The research vessel drifted far below, almost invisible against the water.

Her father was down there.

And somewhere beneath the Atlantic, a hidden system was waiting for her.

The black reconnaissance jet moved beside her wing.

“Valkyrie,” General Monroe said, “I need you to guide us in.”

Sarah looked at the two silent Raptors.

Then at the ocean.

Five years ago, she had sworn never to become Valkyrie again.

But her father was trapped below.

And whoever had summoned her knew exactly which part of her would never refuse.

She pressed the radio button.

“Tell your pilots to keep up.”

Then, far beneath the clouds, the dark water opened around the research vessel.

And something massive began rising from the Atlantic.
