THE JANITOR WHO NEVER STOPPED WATCHING

The voice on Irene’s phone spoke again.

“Ma’am, the surveillance team has the entire garage on live feed.”

Bradley’s face went blank.

Megan’s eyes widened.

Irene did not look away from him.

“Colonel Raines,” she said into the phone, “confirm that Major Nash is still standing beside Private Price’s vehicle.”

A pause followed.

Then the colonel answered.

“Confirmed.”

Bradley took one step back.

“You set me up?”

“No,” Irene replied. “You chose this.”

Her voice remained quiet, but now every word seemed to fill the empty garage.

“I was assigned to clean this level because three female soldiers reported being followed here after late shifts.”

Megan stared at her.

“You knew?”

“I suspected,” Irene said. “I did not know who.”

Bradley’s eyes flicked toward the security cameras hidden above the concrete pillars.

The harmless old janitor had never been harmless.

She had been watching.

Listening.

Waiting for the truth to reveal itself.

The colonel’s voice came through the phone again.

“Major Nash, remain where you are. Military police are entering the garage.”

Bradley’s confidence returned for one desperate second.

“You cannot believe her. She is a civilian.”

Irene gave him a small, tired smile.

“That is what you thought.”

She reached inside her jacket and pulled out a worn leather case.

Its edges were cracked from years of use.

Inside was an identification badge.

Megan leaned closer.

Then stopped breathing.

The photograph showed Irene when she was younger, wearing a dark uniform and a serious expression.

Below it were the words:

IRENE SHAW
FORMER CHIEF INVESTIGATOR, ARMY CRIMINAL INQUIRY DIVISION

Bradley stared at the badge.

“You retired.”

“Officially.”

The sound of boots echoed from the far stairwell.

Bradley turned toward the exit.

Irene’s voice stopped him.

“Do not run.”

He froze.

“You have spent years telling frightened people that no one would believe them,” she continued. “Tonight, you were wrong.”

Megan slowly stepped away from her car.

Her hands were shaking, but her voice was clear.

“He has done this before.”

Bradley looked at her sharply.

Megan flinched for only a moment.

Then she looked directly at Irene.

“He threatened me because I found something in his office. Files. Names. Reports that were never submitted.”

Irene’s expression changed.

“What kind of reports?”

Megan reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a small flash drive.

“I copied them before he saw me.”

Bradley’s fear became real.

“Give me that.”

Megan stepped behind Irene.

“No.”

At that exact moment, the stairwell door burst open.

Military police flooded into the garage.

But Colonel Raines was not with them.

Instead, an older woman in dress uniform walked through the line of officers.

She looked at Irene first.

Then at the flash drive in Megan’s hand.

“Irene,” she said quietly, “tell me we finally found the missing evidence.”

Irene looked at Megan.

Then at Bradley.

“We found more than evidence.”

The woman’s eyes hardened.

“Whose names are in those files?”

Megan looked down at the flash drive.

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered the answer.

“The names of the people who promoted him.”
